1940's BABY’S CROCHET COAT - Age 3 Months

  

Materials: 8 Balls Quaker Saxony

                   1 Steel Crochet Hook No. 2

 

Measurements: Width all round at underarm 18 ins. Length from top of shoulder 9 ˝ ins. Sleeve seam 4 ins.

 

Gauge: Approx. 4 patterns = 1 inch.

 

Special Abbreviation:  WOH = wool over hook.

 

 

 

 

The Coat is worked from the neck down. 

Ch. 58 sts.

 

1st Row: WOH insert into 3rd Ch. from hook. Draw up a loop. WOH insert into next Ch. Draw up a loop (5 loops on hook). WOH and through all 5 loops. Ch. 1.  *(WOH insert into next Ch. Draw up a loop) twice. WOH and through all 5 loops on hook. Ch. 1. Repeat from * 26 times. Ch. 3, Turn. (28 groups in row).

 

2nd Row: (WOH insert in 3rd Ch. from hook. Draw up a loop) twice. WOH and through all 5 loops on hook. Ch.1. (This makes 1 increased st.). Inc. once more in same st. WOH insert into same st. as increases. Draw up a loop. WOH insert under next Ch. 1. space. Draw up a loop. WOH and through all 5 loops on hook. Ch. 1. Always work Ch. 1 after every increased st. and every group. Work 1 more group. *Work 2 increases in same st. as last group. Work 6 groups working the first loop of 1st group into same st. as increased sts. Repeat from * 3 times. Work 2 increases in same st. as last group. Work 2 groups. Work 2 increases in same st. as last group. Ch. 3, Turn.

 

3rd Row: WOH insert into 3rd Ch. from hook. Draw up a loop. WOH insert under next Ch. 1 space. Draw up a loop. WOH and through all 5 loops on hook. Ch. 1 *WOH insert under same Ch. Draw up a loop. WOH insert under next Ch. Draw up a loop. WOH and through all 5 loops on hook. Ch. 1. Repeat from * to end of row, working last loop of last group into turning Ch. Of previous row. Ch. 3, Turn (42 groups in row).

 

4th Row: Inc. twice in 3rd Ch. from hook. Work 5 groups. *inc twice in same st. as last group. Work 8 groups. Repeat from * 3 times. Inc. twice in same st. as last group. Work 5 groups. Inc. twice in same st. as last group. Ch. 3, Turn.

 

5th Row: As 3rd row (56 groups in row).

 

Continue increasing 14 sts across row in this manner every alternate row, that is, having 3 more sts. between 1st and 2nd increases and 6th  and last increases and 2 more sts. between other increases, until there are 98 groups in row ending with 11th row. Continue increasing as before but inc. only once in 1st and last st. of every alternate row instead of twice, that is increasing 12 sts. across row to 122 groups in row ending with 15th row. Ch. 3, Turn.

 

16th Row: Work 20 groups (Left front). Skip 22 groups (Left sleeve). Work 19 groups, Inc. twice in same st. as last group. Work 19 groups (Back). Skip 22 groups (Right sleeve). Work 20 groups (Right front). Ch. 3, Turn. Continue in pattern inc. only at center back every alternate row until work measures 4 ins. from underarm.

 

With right side of work facing, work  1 row s.c. around entire Coat. Ch. 3.  Work 2 rows d.c. along both front edges and neck. Break wool. Join at front edge at point opposite last increases at Front edge. Ch. 3. Work 2 rows d.c. across neck to corresponding point on other front. Break wool.

Join at lower corner and proceed: -- Picot Edge: *1 s.c. in next st. Ch. 3, 1 s.c. in same st. Skip 1 st. Repeat from * around entire Coat. Fasten off.

 

Sleeves: Join wool at underarm. Ch. 3. Work 4 ins. even in pattern. With right side of work facing, work 1 row s.c. Ch. 3, Turn. Work 1 row d.c. then Picot edge as given for body of Coat. Fasten off.

Turn back collar and border along Front edges. Thread ribbon, under 2 d.c. and over 2 d.c. along 1st row of collar as illustrated. Sew sleeve seams. Turn back cuffs.
